Who Is Eligible for Medicare Insurance?

Medicare is a government-funded health insurance program intended for individuals who are 65 years old or older or individuals who qualify by meeting specific medical conditions.

Since Medicare insurance is federally subsidized, eligible patients must meet specific requirements.

Age Requirement

Individuals who are at least 65 and older are eligible for Medicare insurance.

SSDI and the RRB

Individuals receiving SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) or Railroad Retirement Board benefits for 24 months or more are eligible for Medicare insurance. This may include individuals under the age of 65.

ESRD and ALS

A person who has been declared with end-stage renal disease or individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis may qualify for Medicare insurance regardless of age.

Types of Medicare Insurance Options

Medicare insurance can be complicated and hard to understand for many people. We can simplify the complexities of Medicare insurance by categorizing it into the following groups:

Medicare Part A

The first part of Medicare insurance provides coverage for your medical care, including hospital and hospice care.

Medicare Part B

The second component of Medicare insurance focuses on your medical equipment, doctor’s visits, and preventative services.

Medicare Part C (or Medicare Advantage)

This allows you to take a different approach to your Medicare benefits. Private insurance plans such as medicare advantage will usually provide coverage such as Medicare A and B.

Medicare Part D

Prescription drug coverage is covered through this part of Medicare and can sometimes be a part of Medicare C.

Medicare Insurance Drug Plans

Medicare Part D is the prescription drug benefit offered by Medicare. There are two main types of Medicare Part D plans:
^

Stand-alone plans — These are sold by private insurance companies and are separate from Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

^

Medicare Advantage prescription drug plans (MA-PD plans) — These plans are sold by private insurance companies and combine Part D drug coverage with other benefits, such as Part A and B coverage, vision, dental, and hearing coverage.

How to Sign Up for Medicare Insurance

Did you know that people are automatically signed up for Medicare A & B when they turn 65? If an individual or their spouse paid Medicare taxes during their career, they are eligible. There are instances where individuals may need to request enrollment.

Eber & Associates can guide you through the process to confirm your eligibility.
